RYOBI ONE+ 18V vs 40V: Two Separate Battery Platforms Explained

ONE+ 18V runs the drill-and-driver ecosystem. 40V is a separate outdoor-power platform. They don't cross.

Buyer note: This guide compares platform fit, specs, and ownership tradeoffs. Compatibility is not a safety endorsement — always verify voltage and platform for your exact tool, and treat aftermarket packs as a warranty and safety trade-off.

Two platforms, not one lineup

RYOBI sells two separate cordless systems under one brand: ONE+ 18V for a broad tool ecosystem and RYOBI 40V for outdoor power equipment. A ONE+ battery does not fit a 40V tool and vice versa — different voltage and mount. Before you buy a pack, confirm which platform your exact tool uses; "RYOBI" on the box is not enough.

ONE+ 18V: the backward-compatible promise

RYOBI's current PBP005 page describes the pack as compatible with the ONE+ system. That means platform identification comes first; capacity and weight follow. The 4.0Ah PBP005 adds a fuel gauge and is documented for ONE+ tools, but BatteryFits does not infer performance on a specific tool without model-level evidence or testing.

40V: built for outdoor power, not drills

RYOBI 40V exists because mowers, string trimmers, and chainsaws draw far more sustained current than a drill or driver ever will. The higher voltage and larger cell count give outdoor tools the runtime and torque they need. The tradeoff is platform lock-in: a 40V pack is a dedicated outdoor-equipment battery, not a do-everything pack, and it costs more per unit than an equivalent ONE+ pack. If your RYOBI tools are all indoor drills and drivers, you likely never need to touch the 40V lineup.

What we actually carry, and why

Our catalog currently carries one genuine pack per platform: the RYOBI ONE+ PBP005 (18V, 4.0Ah, LED fuel gauge, 3-year warranty) for the drill-and-driver ecosystem, and the RYOBI 40V 4Ah High Capacity pack for outdoor equipment. Both are genuine RYOBI packs, not aftermarket — we'd rather carry two verified, warrantied options than pad the page with unverified third-party listings. If you need a different capacity within either platform, the platform-fit rule above still applies: any 18V pack fits any ONE+ tool, and any 40V pack fits any 40V tool.

The one question that matters before you buy

Ignore the shared RYOBI branding and check the tool's own label for "ONE+ 18V" or "40V." That single detail tells you the entire compatible battery family — capacity and fuel-gauge features are the only things left to decide once you know which platform you're actually shopping for.
